saw this car parked on pearl yesterday. its was pretty freaking cute. its probably not as cute in the picture as it was parked right in front of my face, but though i would share anyway.
lots of stuff has been happening. been real busy. all my friends are graduating and its all very odd. brandon is probably getting this 70k a year job where they will pay him to take graduate courses at MIT. freaking weird. i went to the physics colloquia yesterday that joe redish gave and i talked with him a bit afterward. he is awesome. just as awesome as all of the work i have read from him. i wish i had a high enough phys gpa to get into the university of maryland where he is. it would be so amazing to work with him in graduate school. i'm excited about PER again. hell, i'm excited about graduate school again. well, lots of stuff has been happening. i've got to run off to my office hours at the moment but perhaps i will be back later. i want to make a mix this weekend. i might just do that.
its that time again. this mix has been compiled and sitting on my playlists for a little bit, i just haven't been able to find the time to upload it. i think of this one as a bit of a weird bridge between hip hop and idm (the click pop kind). and of course with some post rock and folk thrown in there too. i can't confine my tastes to just one genre. genres are overrated in general. if you have problems downloading or unzipping let me know! last time there were two instances of it not working and i'm trying to figure out why.
happy listening!
tracklist 1. the prototypes - who's gonna sing ok, so these guys are actually on tour in the US right now. it really sucks that they aren't coming to colorado, so i won't be able to see them. but they are going to some other major cities such as seattle (shenny) or chicago (pancho) or texas (those of you (pat) that are going to sxsw instead of our less is more party you should check them out). i expect reports back. go to their (french) website for other dates. 2. modeselektor - silikon MDSLKTR is a berlin glitch band. i have yet to get a full length from them, but its on the top of my "must... get... this... cd..." list. thom yorke is quite obsessed with these guys, and they list richard d james as one of their top influences. i actually got this song from an itunes "celebrity mix" from thom yorke, which by the way is also quite good. i suppose this just proves that incest, at least in the music sense, is not bad. 3. viktor vaughn - ode to road rage viktor. also known as mf doom. good rap. really good rap. 4. au revoir simone - and sleep al mar au revoir simone is brooklyn based. thanks kevin for giving this to me. they are a cute triplet of girls that all have the same hair. this comes off of their 2004 self titled release. 5. the shivers - chelsea hotel #2 alright, so yes i know the shivers were on last month's mix. but i'm still obsessed with them so they are going on here again. charades is a very odd cd, some songs are rather "eh", but other songs like this one or like beauty (there are more than just the two) are fucking phenomenal. the entire record, actually, reminds me a bit of early mountain goats. very lowfi and very good at points. this song is a leonard cohen cover and oh how i love it. ah, leonard. "i remember you well in the chelsea hotel, thats all i don't think of you that often." 6. books - a little longing goes away again, the books. i love books. both in musics form and readings form. 7. anja garbarek - her room here is the first of a few songs on this here mix that i received from my friend mika (at noisedfisk). he kindly made me a mix (or two) with a lot of great scandinavian bands on them. and as i couldn't very well add all of them to my obsessions list (don't want to have an identical playlist here) i picked my three favorites. anja garbarek, a norwegian artist, is favorite #1. 8. beach house - tokyo witch there is just something about this song that i love and i can't quite place my finger on it. either the slightly dead sound of her voice or the peculiar egyptian-like melody. very interesting. this is their most recent cd off of carpark records (which also homes kid606). 9. stryofoam - front to back styrofoam's cd nothing's lost is really really great. on almost every song there is a new featured artist. ben gibbard of death cab and the postal service is one such artist. its funny, a bit ago when i was listening to this cd (not the ben gibbard song in particular) my roommate m.e. walked into my room and described them as "a good postal service". now, i like the postal service and disagree with the connotation that they are bad. but i can see where she is coming from. this entire cd is like a good postal service. 10. al wilson - the snake al wilson had a few big (as in billboard top 10 hits) back in the 60s. this was one of them. i have a love for 60s music. the zombies being my favorite :) 11. mc paul barman - excuse you "i can rock the mic to silence by john cage" awesome. 12. efterklang - swarming favorite #2 from mika's scandinavian mix. efterklang are from denmark. they run the remraket label that has some cool bands on it including grizzly bear (also on warp, and also on last month's mix) and amiina (the female violin quartet behind sigur rós). 13. flunk - blue monday and then we have favorite #3. what a fantastic cover this is! i'm in love! flunk is yet another norwegian band. they apparently just finished touring in the US in 2006. oh well. but on the bright side they also just finished (as in this february) a new album titled "personal stereo". its official release date is on april 23 if case you people are interested. or so says their website. 14. perseph1 - eh you alright, this wasn't exactly the song i wanted to put on here. in reality the songs that i have become obsessed with over this past month is called listen and it is with perseph1 and the tape. i couldn't find a downloadable version of this song. as far as i can tell it can only be heard (her cd isn't yet released) off of this freaking fantastic mix titled "the tape: mix part 2" that was done by the tape vs RQM (off of the kitty-yo label). it looks like the tape just totally revamped their web page and i'm terribly sorry to tell you that they seem to have removed the download link to this mix. boo! well, it might be back later. anyway, this song by perseph1 has quickly become quite a good replacement obsession song. i really like her and i'm pretty excited for her debut cd. she reminds me of a female saul williams in many ways. 15. thom yorke - the drunkk machine i had to put this on here. this is from his newest ep "splitting feathers" which contains some b-sides to the eraser, some new stuff (like this), and two videos. quite good. i might like it more than the eraser. i said might. 16. grails - stray dog grails is off of the temporary residence label (think mono, explosions in the sky...) and they are really really good. very dark and melodic. i love instrumental things. 17. xela - suspiria more xela, i know. if case you didn't recall from my ramblings last time, john xela (though i'm not entirely sure that is his real name) is the head of my favorite label ever, type records. this songs comes from his halloween/suspiria 7" which is really fantastic. dark and glitchy and great to listen to near halloween. and, you know, other times of the year as well. 18. larkin grim - little weeper brace yourselves friends, i saved the best for the last. larkin grim is from providence road island (this makes it your responsibility alex my dear to go to her concerts) and she is a folk artist who just blows my mind. blows my freaking mind. this song in particular.
i love LaTex. even when i don't know what i'm doing wrong.

friends! comrades! hello! i am proud to announce the beginning of a beautiful trend. you see, my days consists of a continuum of homework, work work, and the physics building (and maybe some sleep). but! while i work work, homework, or waste away my existence in the depths of physics dungeons, i listen to music. tons and tons of music. i would love to have a radio show at 1190 (i'm looking at you, pat) but i neither have the time to volunteer for the required hours or probably the time to freaking do the show. but there is a solution! here are two mixes i have made during december and january. these are a collection of songs i have became obsessed with over those past two months, and now i share the obsession with you. i'm already mostly finished with febuary's mix, so expect more later :)
Part 2 1. Savage Ritual - Xela Xela is the founder of Type records, my absolute favorite favorite record label. this is from his newest full length "the dead sea". Matthew Woodson (ghostco), a unbelievably talented artist who's work i have been following for many years did the artwork for this and a few other type albums (including helios' 'eingya'). everything about this cd is appealing. electro-postrock perfectness. 2. (not sure what the name to this one is...) - Песни Нашего Века here's another one from Will. thanks Will. my friend devin described this one as "russian gay show tune music". i think he is wrong. 3. La Chanson De Prevert - Sambassadeur i have been searching for sambassadeur's cd for so long and i finally found it! i would describe it as wonderful swedish twee. 4. I Am John - Lonely, Dear this one i like for how nice and cute it is. you can't help but wiggle your but a little when hearing it. 5. Biff Bang Pow! - The Creation i've found a lot of great 80s bands over these past months... hmm 6. You're Gonna Miss Me - 13th Floor Elevators remember this one? well, ok, i wasn't alive then either. but i have certainly heard this before. 7. Satan Said Dance - CYHSY new one from clap you hands! yes, indeed, it has leaked. this was my favorite point in their show a couple months ago. architecture in helsinki was opening for them, and for this song everyone from both bands paraded around the stage carrying drums and tambourines and what not singing along. satan satan... satan satan... 8. To Gold Finch and the Red Oak - Ted Leo & The Pharmacists im in love with this song. such a pity that the rest of ted leo's songs don't sound like this. really, nothing like this at all. it's really weird. 9. Plans - Grizzly Bear warp records, you never disappoint me. 10. Don't Even Sing About It - The Books not new per say, just a new re-obsession. i really love the books. 11. I Wish That I Could See You Soon - Herman Düne hah. here we go again. if you don't remember, i posted the video for this a while ago. i love mr. Düne. 12. Beauty - The Shivers beauty beauty beauty 13. Tonight You Belong To Me - Patience and Prudence this one goes to christie my darling. she made me a mix a little bit ago and this was on it. instant love.
thats it. hope you guys enjoyed it. tell me if you had any difficulties downloading. i'm new to this file hosting thing.
alright, some background: my quantum professor is pretty terrifying. hes a theorist... one of those theorists. he talks primarily out of one side of his mouth, gets angry when you don't have immediate recall ability of (insert blank) gaussian/hypergeometric/weird ass integral, the graduate students have named a unit of arrogance after him (the DeGrand... similar to the Farad in that one DeGrand is a lot of arrogance). anyway, we don't use a particular book for the class primarily because DeGrand thinks all books are fundamentally flawed in one way or another. granted, this is a pretty true statement and its better to use ten different books anyway. but as far as i can tell DeGrand composes his lectures independent of any text. one day, a couple semesters ago, a student taking his graduate quantum class decided to type up all of these lecture notes in LaTex. DeGrand supported this student's efforts but found his grammar abhorrent. So that summer he took the source file and connected the dots a bit, filling in the blanks between equations with some (mostly) astoundingly lucid explanations. this tex file spans almost 300 pages and is the closes thing to a text this class has. it also commonly gives you detailed information on how to solve the homework sets, so to say the least, this file is pretty freaking useful. i've been using it for more than a semester now and it has served me well. but tonight when i was working on this week's quantum set (degenerate state perturbation theory... calculate stark effect splitting in helium... blah blah *hits head against table*), the file got a little weird. as i was reading through i realized i had no idea what these equations were saying. this is a pretty common issue for me, but, no.. these were just weird and wrong. then i realized that, you know, none of this shit makes sense. then i laughed at its symbolic brilliance.
hi guys, so i just found something pretty cool. IMified is an aim (or jabber/msn/yahoo) buddy that seems to be a pretty genius idea. this cute little piece of code lets you do a bunch of actions over aim such as post to livejournal/blogger/wordpress or what have you (yes, i am typing this entry over aim right now). you can also set reminders and todos and IMified will make sure you don't forget about them. it seems to work across a bunch of web apps -- google calalder being the most talked about. i haven't finished playing around with it yet, but it seems pretty awesome. want in? send a message to IMified and have fun!
(just noticed that its a little html stupid at blog posting.. but its under construction so perhaps this will be fixed soon)
